Fiberglass Body Parts
Fiberglass has been used to make body parts for
a variety of reasons. Lightweight , strong , durable , and easy to repair make it ideal
for off road applications. Metal parts when crashed will fold into the way of the tire and
cut it up where fiberglass will spring back and stay out of the way. With the demand for
bigger tires the need to design fenders with larger wheel openings and more flare was
apparent .
To make a fender or bedside you have to make an original first. This is called a plug.
This is where the real time is spent especially if you want a nice part. Hundreds of hours
go into plug work depending on the design. Then a mold is made of the plug . After the
molds are completed and waxed you can make parts. Gelcoating is first for a barrier
between the paint and fiberglass. Then fiberglass is laminated onto the gel coat. After
curing the finished part is removed ,trimmed and sanded on the edges and is ready to ship.
All fiberglass comes with a gel coat finish which is ready to sand , primer and
paint just like a metal fender or hood is. We package and ship most fiberglass
by truck freight as the containers are too large for ups. Keep in mind that
sometimes scratches etc will appear and happen as a result of handling. These
are minor and of no problem for the body shop to sand smooth after primer etc.
